Introduction

Centrica Storage, like many other companies in the oil and gas sector, has experienced significant organisational change in recent years.

Operating in an increasingly challenging business environment, the company was looking for ways in which it could improve efficiency, productivity and business performance.

Recognising that a business is only as good as its people, Centrica Storage collaborated with Tua Optimum to develop a health and wellbeing programme designed to support its 300+ workforce across a number of different onshore and offshore locations in the UK.

The programme, which is now in its fourth year has been instrumental in supporting cultural and behavioural change, and such is its success that it continues to be offered to everyone who joins the company.

It has had a measurable, direct and positive impact on the bottom line. Reduced sickness and absenteeism and increased employee retention are just a couple of examples of how Centrica Storage is seeing a return on its investment.

“I believe that a healthy workforce is a commercial necessity and investing in your people, particularly when times are tough, is critical to the long-term success of your business. Nothing is more important that the wellbeing of your people. Look after them and they will look after your business.”

Greg McKenna, Chief Executive, Centrica Storage
The Situation
Centrica Storage had previously used an off-the-shelf health and wellbeing programme, which had delivered no sustainable change, long-term benefit to employees, tangible return on investment, or impact on the bottom line.
The Challenge
To achieve sustainable health and wellbeing through behaviour change, in order to address rising long-term sickness rates, and an increasing number of serious physical and mental health issues, all in the context of an ageing workforce and during a period of ongoing uncertainty and organisational change.
The Solution
To offer every member of the CSL team the opportunity to participate in Tua Optimum’s health and wellbeing programme. The programmes were tailored to meet an individual’s specific needs, based on the following steps:
  1. Full physical and mental health check with individual report and recommendations
  2. Individual 1:1 ‘executive style’ wellbeing coaching session to:
    • Help individuals reflect and reassess; what do they want to change?
    • Agree collaborative actions; how are they going to change?
    • Develop a sustainable and realistic action plan; what are they going to do and what support is needed?
  3. Where appropriate, a fitness assessment with individual reports, recommendations and bespoke training programmes
  4. Gym membership
  5. Coaches ‘keep in touch’ by face to face, email and telephone coaching
  6. Repeat & Review cycle to provide continuous support, assess progress and amend the plan
The Result
Participation:
  • 97% of the workforce have had at least one full physical and mental health check
  • 82% of the workforce have had at least one fitness assessment
  • 70% of the workforce have participated in 1:1 coaching
  • 80% of the workforce have a rolling programme and action plan

  • Total combined body mass loss – 76.7 metres (the equivalent length of nine London buses)
  • Total combined stomach measurement loss – 19.9 metres (the equivalent length of a cricket pitch)
  • Short-term sickness absence reduced by 7%, and long-term sickness reduced to zero
